Welcome to the Jungle!

Ok ... dear friends, unfortunately we're not quite out of the woods just yet!! I'm probably going to be out of commission for awhile, although I do find this blog a source of comfort as well as immense fun, so you never know, I may still be updating. Keep thinking those happy thoughts though!

In threes they say ... surely I must be out of the woods then!

Ok ... having put foot firmly in mouth on another blog, I just wanted to put something down here before tomorrow ... as things could change considerably post 3.15pm!

Anyhoo, first the operation, then disaster in the kitchen with a fat fire mishap, then mum in hospital!!

So it was a weekend of wine and dvd rentals! Just to recharge spirits and nerve ... oh and of course Australian Idol ... sucked in AGAIN!!! I'm really hating myself right now. Is it too early to have a favourite? If not, then what is it with me and teachers? Oh and a Radiohead song to boot.

If you know me or are a "friend" of this blog, please please please think happy thoughts for me tomorrow.

Vale John Hughes

Ok ... if you were a child of the 80s ... and I mean a real child of the 80s ... then you would have seen/heard of/listened to a song from/copied an outfit off or wished you could get your hands on an outfit off one of John Hughes' movies ... you would have lusted after the first real celebreity fanta pants Molly Ringwald (if you were slightly off kliter),

or lusted after Andrew MacCarthy (at least until you see him in a love scene with Ally Sheedy - they're spooning and you can't tell whose arm is whose - WRONG!!) You'd even have a 20 sec moment of indiscretion with Judd Nelson, (maybe its the floppy hair .. who knows - I wasn't really an Emilio Estevez fan and Anthony Michael Who ... c'mon!)

... and Ducky!! OMG he was the nerd but girlfriend was always dressed mighty fine!!

Thank you John Hughes for shaping my teenage intellect and giving visual vent to all the angst and desires of this particularly lonely schoolboy wrapped up in his books, magazines and records, completely terrified of the world outside his shared bedroom walls.

MUST SEE:

(i) Breakfast Club

(ii) Pretty in Pink

(iii) Sixteen Candles

Have yourself an 80s video weekend ... go on ... in honour of this influential director. (oh and I've not mentioned Ferris Bueller's Day Off ... I don't need to, do I? I mean you have seen it ... wait a minute ... what you haven't?? Seriously? And why the fuck not .. rectify this sitch ASAP!!!)

We need peace love and understanding

Ok .... I think its safe enough to pull this post out of draft as I believe the present has been sent and received.

I’ve always been curious about peops who collect figurines. Especially the ones that have no music, filmic or comic connection, or store/brand/TV tie-in. It seems like there must be factories out there in China just designing and spewing forth little plastic representations of anything from kitchen utensils, hardware through to display cases with miniature cakes.

And they’re not cheap!! With a tagline of “collect and trade” I know which side the bread is buttered on indeed. Who does and why would?

Anyhoo, is this what they refer to as Otaku?? I know that's like an all encompassing expression but is commonly associated with Anime and Manga. And obviously tangential links to Cosplay, animation conventions etc ...

But I was wracking the ole brain cells to try and find a present for a certain someone, and missing that certain someone terribly, and just having one of those weeks ... you know when nothing seems to go right and you can't see how it ever will ... I don't want to talk about the black dog nipping at my heels, as I'm not going to cheapen what is a real and severly debilitating condition with my frippery ... but feeling a little sensitive, the riot of colour and detail in the display window drew me in.

And seeing the displays of sushi (hello Sushi train) and cakes (hello Laurent!) it just made me think of the good times, and yes actually gave me a chuckle and a cheesy smile right there in the store ... so maybe I've answered my question about the why woulds ... and I guess the who does really is anyone! So if it makes you feel as good as I did in those first few moments of entering this particular aladdin's cave, then I say lets all get sucked in together!

My fiancee collects those miniaturized foods and recently gave a whole bunch of them to my sister. Some of them are really high quality and I think that's what draws people in - just how realistic these mass-produced collectables are.

I know some people who collect what ever figures are being released at the time, it doesn't matter if they're based on Dragon Ball, Naruto or are miniature farm animals and food. Aegis-san, for instance, collects every collectable series the 7-Elevens have: http://jiteki.blog.so-net.ne.jp/

Self-Indulgent Warning - skip this if your mental constituition needs a B12 shot

Ok ... as promised time to get bored. I can feel your yawns coming on ... and the oompah Benny Andersson shit playing on my speaker, if you could hear it, prolly will not help!

We have taken the next big step on our road to finally achieving adulthood by entering the realm of Home Improvement. M, in particular has been boring all and sundry with his plans for our house, but we finally gawn done it!!! We have knocked through our back wall in order to put in a pair of mighty fine french doors:

 the wall stripped bare

the first cut!

an outline

 peel off the plaster

We were looking for an all in one service offering (stay way from Doors Plus) and opted for Doors Galore based mainly on the fact that they were going to make the hole and install the door as well, which meant we only had to deal with the one trade ...  literally, our builder T was working so-lo!! (call me naive, but I was a bit surprised at that)

He was Mr Comedy Man on top of that. The minute he walked in, he goes "where's the hole!!!" Oh my sides!! He didn't have the best comedic timing, but there are worse ways to break the ice. M of course launched in with the whole I used to be a builder remember the time when ... you know the deal. I fluttered, camera in hand, making sure that details were not being ignored. It was pretty exciting when he made the first cut ... and most of it was done by hand ... another naive assumption on my part, but I was ready with the power adaptors and extension leads for his special cut a building in half electric saw?? Anyhoo ... after a minor kerfuffle over T having thought our walls were made of asbestos sheeting ... yeah good one T ... another one of your ice-breaking jokes perhaps?? Best to leave that one out of the repertoire.

Once the plaster came off, pretty soon the weatherboards were gone leaving just the struts ...

 daylight peaking through

yanking the weatherboards off

struts exposed

I think T turned up about 8.30-ish?? And probably started around 9? He worked right through to 7pm without even stopping for a lunch break ... and he didn't even want
tea or coffee or a glass of water for that matter? Is this usual?? I dunno.

As it turned out, getting the hole ready is the easy part, getting the frame in and making sure the doors fit and work ... that took the bulk of the time, lots of hacking and sawing ... apart from helping out with holding on to bits and pieces, I left T to get on with the job at hand. It wasn't long before one side was in ... and as twilight approached and the lights came on ... T was on the home stretch. But not before one more stab at being named Comic of the year!! After exposing the struts, he goes "Alright I'm done! See ya". Hhmmm! And I go, yeah well you can go without the cheque.

 now the real work begins

 first one in ...

then the next ....

After fiddling round with the architraves ... T's work was done. Now you get what you pay for, so there were a few sloppy bits, fixable .. but a little annoying. We still have to sand it down, put an undercoat on the outside and stain it to match the rest of our doors ... but wow they're in!! And what a difference it has made to the space .. and actually to the vibe of the house as a whole!

Oh and I don't really know what I was trying to take with this picture .. but it kinda encapsulates how we feel ...

PS ... why is everyone hating on the new Kasabian album? Its pretty darn good.
